RPG Maker: 2D Games in Development

While I stopped making some MS Paint art. I started getting interested in making games using RPG Maker XP. I had to look on many tutorials to understand how to make it work. One of my inspiration was Amanda of Amaranth games. My sister played her first free game called Ahriman's Prophecy then onto the Aveyond Series. Many casual gamers know her for this. I am also inspired since she is also a girl just like us and she managed to finish and successfully release a game. While programming is not really our forte, hopefully we can accomplish and finish the game we started making. Oh I wonder how many years will pass, 10 years? Ohoho >D Here are some screen shots so far.

Characters
We planned to have 4 main characters for the game for now.

Maps:
I'm planning to use custom made tilesets. I have to say it is very time consuming indeed and tricky to make. Patience is indeed a virtue when doing pixels!

Tent

Interior House

I have finished the interior of the houses for the small town I'm making, I may change or add some items eventually. This is actually "Bahay Kubo" inspired. I thought we can incorporate some of our country's native houses for a change.

I am still halfway finishing the town, I will post updates when I finish more tilesets and maps.

Opening an Art Shop

After sometime I got tired of making avatar edits and I wanted to practice coloring using the cell-shading style. I thought maybe I can improve my coloring skills trying to color in a simpler or basic method. Since our pc is very old and cannot handle photoshop opened for a long time without crashing, I decided to try using MS Paint instead.

I started experimenting and here's one of my older works:
Tifa
Kid
My guy OC

To practice more, I opened a shop on gaia and here are some of my commissioned pieces.

Gaia Online: Starting Out

Gaia Online is an anime online community where you can play games, chat, dress up your avatar and look for art. It is actually one of the biggest forum avatar sites out there. I have joined back in the year 2005 I believe and have been going on and off. I used to run a shop there for avatar edits and then later on decided to try opening a shop for custom requests of pixel art. Anyway, let's start off for some of the old avatar edits I have done back then.

The ever popular Final Fantasy VII game. Back then this was my way of doing fanarts for the games xD

I just want to say I am not happy how Sora ended up >.>

I wanted to play this game again since it was so long and I was really young when i played this. Sorry there's no Squall I made for this one but I did make a very old version of him when I was just learning. I only liked Squall during the beginning of the game but when he started doing the punching action and whatever lines, well he turned me off. I prefer Laguna over him anytime xD

Another final fantasy series. I have always liked FFX than X-2 in terms of story and the characters but I enjoyed playing it nonetheless. I even made a back to back version of Lenne and Yuna haha

Let's move on other than the square's games. Sony's Legend of Dragoon is one of my favorite games of all time. The battle system with the VA's is one of the first that drew my attention. Many people say that LOD is a rip off of FF7. I disagree with that, although the graphics may be similar I think the concept is entirely different. This game deserves more love.

Yes Shadow hearts again xD I really love this game. The story and the characters particularly the main protragonist is my favorite. The main character actually acts like a guy! His personality is more normal and realistic than other usual protagonists of games these days.

I have managed to play only the ps2 version of Magna Carta. The art and character design is what drew me to this game. I really like Calintz's character design on the second image compared to his character in the ps2 game. I thought he was a "she" >.>

Another ps2 2D game. This is one of the Shining Games Series. The character art is what's this game very popular of. The art was made by Tony Taka.

One of my first games was Grandia then Grandia 2 came. I believe the first and the 2nd game are the best of the series compared to the latter game releases.

A game released by Square but made by the Tri-ace group I think. I have mixed feelings about this game. I liked it and hate it at the same time xD

AH yes the best rpg of the ps1 genre. The story of this game is too vast and complicated. The battle system is very unique as well. The music is excellent, thanks to Yasunori Mitsuda. The story is such a masterpiece. It's one of those games that gave me a warm feeling when I finished the game. When Fei said, this is gonna be our last fight together I was like "Noo T_T" I also had multiple save files to view certain events in the game. The nostalgia *sigh* I miss squaresoft.

The prequel of the game Xenogears supposedly although any relation has been cut off since this one was produced by Namco. Square did not seem to care for the xenogears story or project so the creators left instead. KOS-MOS is my favorite character here since she reminds me of Elly in so many ways.

One of the action rpgs I really love. This one is supposed to be a DMC game but was changed later on by Namco. The story made me want to play the game cause I wanted to know why and what truly happened xD I also enjoyed playing as Sieg.

Pixel 2D game by Gust. It is mostly about alchemy, synthesizing items which is the fun part of it. I still enjoy this game in terms of alchemy system compared to the latter releases of the game primarily since there is interaction and reactions for the items you make xD

One of the old ps1 games xD Ah Rei I just love his voice in battle!

This one is from an anime adapted to be a game later on. MMORPG inspired, if only games are like this lol so many people would be really addicted.

It was made by Tri-ace back then originally. It was 2d in the first game in ps1. They kept the 2d movements in maps in the Silmeria game to keep at its original predecessors.

I made edits from the WildArms series 1,2,3. The first one is still my favorite and it is good that they made a remake of the game. The WA series is one of the first games in the ps1 console so it is quite memorable and holds a special place in my gaming experience. I also made a pixel version of Jet Enduro

I have played very few games of the Zelda Series but I recall when I was younger, I watched the TV animated series along with Super Mario Brothers xD I have always liked their theme song.

Pixel Fanart

Pixel Fanart

Here you'll see some fanarts I have made:

Here's a fanart of Roxis Rosenkrantz from the ps2 game Mana Khemia. I haven't done many fanart of characters from many games that I enjoyed playing. He is the usual snobbish bishounen character, looks intelligent indeed but from the story he seems to had to go through some difficulty getting admitted to the academy which he blames the main character for. He is annoyed and bitter it seems because he is the gifted one or what you call the "easy-going genius" and so he considers him a rival. If you are interested in a 2D pixel game, check this video:

For the art itself, the details are a pain (particularly the book pockets! why so many??)I am also trying a different coloring style from the usual cel-shaded I have gotten used to.

Who is this game character? What, you've never heard of her?! She's really popular you know hehe just kidding XD Well she's not really established as a game character yet since shes one of the OCs of my sister named Natalie.

She'd be one of the main characters for the game we are developing using the engine RPGMaker XP. She's a thief/rogue as per design but we still have not finalized the story and how things will work out. I am going to make a separate post for the progress and some screenshots of what I have made so far in our game later on.

Here's a sprite I made (not yet final):

This is the main character of the game Persona 3. People call him as Minato, although you can choose yourself in the game any name you'd like.

This character is a serious one, he rarely smiles or gives any reaction. I think he wants to look cool xD The female counterpart for this game is the opposite of him though.

For the art, the little details in his body like the usb and the ports gave me sometime to finish this piece. I also had to make everything from scratch the card he is holding. Now that I look at him, he kinda looks feminine don't you think? He reminds me of those k-dramas like Coffee Prince and He's beautiful haha

This one here is Luke fon Fabre from the game Tales of Abyss. I made it for my little brother as he requested it. I always liked Luke with his long hair. His short hair looks doesn't look bad at all, it's just that he changed a lot when he cut his hair short and seemed like a different person. I guess the haircut is the game's symbol of his transition to another xD

The game is one of the popular ones from the Tales Series. It's one of the good old rpgs I really enjoyed playing.

This is Albel from the game Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time Yes he is a man wearing a skirt xD I always wanted him paired up with Nel Zelpher. He seems to have a high affection to her despite being on war with her country.

The game itself is fun in terms of the battle system mostly. The battle system is what the game is known for anyway. The graphics are good too for a ps2 game. Story-wise, eh well its alright I guess. The story revolves around realizing that the characters we're only programs (like a game) or made for amusement and then they battle their creators when they were about to be deleted. What do you think?

This two are some of the older pixel art I did for the game Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant, the sequel from its first game Shadow Hearts. This is Jinpachiro and Karin at their respective soldier outfits >D I am particularly fond of this couple and their story. I don't see many fanarts of these characters. I highly recommend the game to anyone as I feel this is one of the underrated rpgs. The battle system, graphics, music, gameplay and the story is just REALLY good. To top of it all, this game is the only one that made me cry. *sigh*

I'm going to look on some videos of this game and post it here sometime. Get this game, I urge you. =D
